Osborn Unleashed: Billy-O Rocks It on Senior Night

Scores four points in final regular season hockey game

Sport-o-Rama—This time is was the son and not the father who made headlines.

Senior night, the annual tradition of the highly successful hockey program where Suffern High School Seniors and their families are recognized for their hard work and contributions took an unexpected twist last night as one senior broke out to have the most memorable game of his high school hockey career.

Billy 'Billy-O" Osborn also known as 'Whippany Will' scored his first point of the season with an assist in the first period but he was far from being done for the night.

Third liner Billy Osborn plays on a checking line that didn’t see much ice time all season although when unleashed, Osborn is unafraid to pop opposing players when things get chippy.

Last night was no different as after a Nyack/Tappan Zee player took a run at a Suffern player, Osborn evened the score and took a seat in the box for 90 seconds.

Then he came to life. An assist added his second point of the game which was followed by a breakaway off of a blocked shot in Suffern’s end. Osborn raced down the ice while shaking off an opposing player to put the puck over the goaltender's shoulder and into the net for his first varsity goal.

He still wasn’t yet done as he added a second goal for a total of four points on the night in the 11-0 win.

“I saw a lot of ice time and when given the opportunity, I rocked it” said Osborn.

When it Comes to Budget Cuts, Should Football be First to Go?

School sports surely mean more in the United States than in any other country. For small-town America, as Buzz Bissinger's revealing book Friday Night Lights, showed, sports teams even become a significant part of a community's identity. In the U.S., we don't have many sports clubs, where children in many other countries participate in athletics.

And now that so many American school districts -- even whole states -- are facing reductions in school funding, more and more, it is athletics that are being cut back. Sometimes now, public school sports survive only by the grace of private donations, from parents and fans. Of course, it's not just sports that are prime prospects for elimination, but also art and music. After all, sports, art and music, the S-A-M of school -- what I call the SAM activities -- are known as extra-curriculars ... emphasis on the extra. They're the logical expenses to slash before you take down the educational basics: readin', writin', arithmetic -- not to mention science ... and maybe history and geography, if anybody cares about them anymore.

It's impossible not to argue with this rational, but it's also true that when children who are artistic or musical are denied that opportunity in school, it not only robs them of developing their talent, but diminishes us as a culture. And to knock out athletic exercise at a time when childhood obesity is an absolute epidemic could be just as damaging for the health of the nation. In a recent New York Times column, David Brooks notes that administrators who cut the SAM activities are deluding themselves, because in the long run, these are interests that "[quote] keep kids in school and build character [unquote]." Children need a little dessert with their academic vegetables.

Suffern to Play Undefeated West Genesee in State Semi Final Matchup

Suffern's Willie Sanchez goes to work.

A convincing win over ETB, a nailbiter over Monroe Woodbury and next weekend it just gets more difficult as the Mounties travel to Utica to take on undefeated West Genesee.

The State Division 1 semi-final game takes place on Saturday March 19th at 10:00am in Utica, NY.  The winner of this game will take on the winner of the Saratoga-Pittsford semi-final contest scheduled for 12:30pm on the same day.  The State Championship game is scheduled for 12:30pm on March 11th.

The Wildcats are the most formidable opponent that Suffern has faced this year.

The Wildcats have seven seniors on their roster and according to scouting reports; they are quick to capitalize on the slightest error.

Suffern of course already knows this as they lost 3-2 to West Genesee at the Wildcat Classic on December 3.

Their defense wears down opponents and they have enough offensive weapons to finish them off.  Most games this season saw the Wildcats limit the number of shots their goaltenders have had to face.

The two biggest players on the team are the goaltenders, with senior goaltender Max Barone weighing in at 270 pounds while sophomore net minder Jacob Pelton is 6’5”.  Looking down the bench, West Genesee has plenty of size with six players 6 feet or taller.

The keys for the Mounties:  Speed, transition, goaltending and patience.   Scoring opportunities may be limited; the Mounties only took twelve shots on goal when they last faced the Wildcats so Suffern has to play their game and make the most of the opportunities that they are presented with.  The fact that Suffern had already seen West Genesee and is one of only four teams to have scored more than one goal against the Wildcats this season could play a factor.  Adler, Redgate and Willie Sanchez will also be key.  Sanchez has a way of getting under the skin of opposing teams, taking them off their game and is skilled at drawing penalties.  Redgate's speed and Adler's puck handling skills could tip the game in Suffern's favor.  On defense, Suffern has gotten excellent goaltending throughout the season from Tyler Stark and Nick Modica and there are very few holes as the Mounties excel at blocking shots and clogging the shooting and passing lanes.

Suffern, a team built for speed and finesse has shown that they can play a hard-hitting, physical game.  If they can come out hard and show West Genesee that they won’t be pushed around, it could be the best contest of the year.

What started out as a fast paced, exciting and fairly even match turned into a shutout for Suffern Senior goalie Tyler Stark as the Mounties matched White Plains' physical play hit for hit.

The White Plains bench called for a number of penalties but the referees let the teams play the game until things heated up with a retaliatory elbow in the second from Suffern's Willie Sanchez followed by punches throw by White Plains ‘ John Sullivan which led to a four minute major and his ejection from the game.

Even though the White Plains players claimed the hit was dirty, Willy Sanchez served his penalty and continued to be a formidable presence on the ice, out-skating, passing and shooting the visiting team.

In the end Suffern’s speed, skill and discipline won the game and earned the shutout even as the teams played a physical game right until the final horn.

In other action Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville beat Clarkstown 4-2 to advance to the semi-finals.

Suffern’s next game is scheduled for 6:30pm at Sport-o-rama.  The likely opponent is Mamaroneck; a team Suffern beat handily 9-1 a few weeks ago on the road. The final score was not in whent his article was published.

Should Suffern win their semi-final game, the finals are scheduled for Sunday February 26th at 4:00pm at West Point.

Once again the Mounties showed that they can hit, kill penalties and score.

Suffern set the tone early with hard, solid hits.  Monroe-Woodbury came right back with hits of their own but were unable to solve Suffern's defense.

At one point Monroe Woodbury had a five-on-three advantage but Suffern managed to kill the penalties with relative ease.

The Mounties chase down and win loose pucks, force errors and were absolutely relentless during the entire game.

Starting goaltender Tyler Stark was given the night off but it didn’t matter.  Backup goalie Nick Modica played a phenomenal game between the pipes stopping two breakaways—the first during the second period as the Monroe-Woodbury player took a feed as he stepped back on the ice after serving a penalty and the second coming with just a few seconds left on the clock in the third period.

Suffern’s next game takes place on Tuesday December 13th at Sport O Rama against North Rockland.
