District Attorney Zugibe Announces Arrest of Rockland County Landlord in Tenant Theft
Rockland County District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe today announced that Syed Bokhari (DOB 02/04/57) of 8 Amarillo Drive, Nanuet, New York has been arrested and arraigned for allegedly stealing $6,922 from two individuals to whom he had rented an apartment.
Bokhari is charged with:
• One count of Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, a class “D” Felony
Between April 2011 and June 2011, the defendant is accused of stealing a federal tax refund check and a New York State tax refund check from the mailbox of a married couple who were renting an apartment in his Nanuet home.
According to the charges, Bokhari, who owns additional properties in Pennsylvania, transported the checks to another renter in Hazleton, Pennsylvania.
Bokhari allegedly paid his Pennsylvania tenant $500 to cash the ill-gotten checks, telling him that he wanted the checks cashed in Hazleton so as not to let his wife in Rockland County learn of the money.
Bokhari’s arrest resulted from a joint investigation conducted by the Rockland County Special Investigations Unit and the United States Postal Inspection Service.
He was arraigned in the Town of Clarkstown Justice Court by the Honorable Scott Ugell and released on his own recognizance.
He is due to return to court on June 6, 2012.
The defendant faces up to seven years in state prison, if convicted.
