Sweet Tips for Sweet Treats from Buddy Valastro

Article sponsored by DealnBid FREE Online Auctions

(Family Features) You might have a favorite cookie or brownie recipe — but did you know you could make it even better by adding a simple, familiar ingredient? With a few expert tips from Buddy Valastro, author and star of TLC’s “Cake Boss,” you can take your sweet treats from good to great in no time.

—Start with Quality Ingredients — When you start with better ingredients, you end up with a better cookie or brownie. Use real butter, high-quality vanilla and great tasting chocolate. Here, Buddy shares some of his favorite recipes that use M&M’S candies to add an extra special touch to family favorites — making them even better.

—Chill the Dough — Leaving cookie dough in the refrigerator gives it more body and results in a fuller and better tasting cookie. Plan ahead so you can refrigerate your dough at least one hour — or, even better, overnight.

—Keep It Uniform — Use a small ice cream scoop to keep your cookies the same size. This not only helps them look professional, but bake up evenly and consistently.

—Pans Matter — Bake cookies on light-colored, non-insulated cookie sheets without sides. Metal pans will cook brownies faster than glass pans, which means cooking times will vary. Start checking your brownies early to test if they’re ready and prevent over baking.

Rockland Bike Club May 15 6:30p "Ride of Silence" to honor cyclists killed in car accidents, promote "share the road," and provide awareness of bicycling safety

Article sponsored by Richard Gandon Photography
Rockland County, May 8 -- Last year, Rockland County resident Janet Martinez was fatally struck by a car while riding on Route 9W near the Upper Grandvew / Piermont border. On May 15 at 6:30p, the Rockland Bicycling Club (RBC) will again join cyclists from all over the country to ride silently in the 11th annual Ride Of Silence to raise awareness of bike safety issues on local roads.

Since the first Ride Of Silence following the death of Plano Texas Bike enthusiast Larry Schwartz in 2003, several thousand rides have been held to honor the thousands of cyclists that have been killed or injured by cars that drove too fast or too close to cyclists. Last year, 320 separate Ride of Silence events were held on seven continents.

Locally, the Ride of Silence has special meaning. In June 2012, recreational cyclist Janet Martinez rode around Rockland Lake in Congers, NY and then continued cycling south on NYS Bike Route 9. Within a few miles of her starting point, Martinez was rear-ended by a motorist traveling at 50 mph on NYS Route 9W.

The Rockland Bicycling Club will lead a Ride of Silence on Wed May 15 from Nyack to Piermont at 6:30p. The route will start at Upper Nyack Elementary School and travel south on Broadway, moving east to Piermont Ave/ River Road after passing the South Nyack Village Hall. Participants will wear either a red or black armband to honor someone who has been injured by a motorist. A black armband means the rider is mourning a cyclist who was fatally injured.

Previously, the RBC has held Rides of Silence to honor the memories of Rockland residents Robert Carl Pinckert and Ennio Spiri. Pinckert, a cyclist from Upper Nyack, died after being fatally struck by a tractor trailer on Rt 303 in June, 2003. Spiri, who lived in Valley Cottage, died from injuries after being hit by a car in September,  2004.

The first Ride of Silence was held in May 2003. Friends of Larry Schwartz, led by cyclist Chris Phelan, decided to honor his memory with a silent ride of cyclists. The first 2003 ride turned attracted 1000 riders cycling silently at 12 mph around White Rock Lake in Dallas, TX. Thousands of cyclists participate in Rides of Silence during May, National Bike Month.

There 21 states require motorists to provide three or more feet of space when passing a cyclist. New York's safe passing law is called "Merrill's Law" in memory of area resident Merrill Cassell, who was killed when he was struck in Tarrytown.  Although the law was enacted in 2010 it has never been enforced.

Move Your Workout and Your Family Outdoors

Article sponsored by Hudson Valley Business Directory

(Family Features) Playing together outdoors is the perfect way for families to bond while staying active and fit, but when seasonal allergies come into play they can keep many families on the sidelines. Allegra is setting out this season to show people there’s no reason to suffer if you have the right relief, and has teamed up with basketball star Lisa Leslie to share fun, affordable workout tips that help families enjoy the outdoors even during allergy season.

“As an athlete and a mom, there’s nothing I enjoy more than getting outside to shoot hoops or run around with my kids, but when our allergy symptoms act up it can keep my whole family indoors,” says Leslie. “I am thrilled to show families that with the help of Allegra their seasonal allergies don’t have to stop them from being outdoors and having fun.”

Lisa shares how to utilize simple household items and a little imagination to transform any backyard or outdoor space in to a family fitness center:

  • Scavenger Hike: Turn a family hike into a scavenger hunt; come up with a fun list of challenges like climbing over a log, finding a pinecone, skipping down an entire trail or racing to the birch tree and back.
  • Driveway Drills: Using chalk and cardboard boxes you can create your own basketball court on the driveway.  Have the kids draw free throw lines and see who can bounce or throw the ball into the cardboard box “hoop.”
  • Time for Fun: Use your kitchen timer or a stopwatch to time kids in sprints, relays and jumping jack sessions; record times on a dry erase board to help kids track their personal best times.

As you venture out into the great outdoors to enjoy family fitness, make sure you’re prepared to recognize the signs of seasonal allergies, which may include sneezing, runny nose, itchy, watery eyes, and itchy nose or throat. With proper management and education, allergy symptoms can be relieved. The Allegra family of allergy products offers effective, long-lasting (one dose lasts at least 12 hours), non-drowsy relief for the whole family.
