ROCKLAND CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC and LEARNING COLLABORATIVE JOIN FORCES TO CREATE AN ADULT DAY-TIME CHORUS

Article sponsored by Data Boy Computer Services

(Pearl RiverNY – May 1, 2013) – The Rockland Conservatory of Music in partnership with the Learning Collaborative at LIU Hudson is thrilled to announce that an adult chorus is underway! Taking place in the Conservatory’s convenient location at 45 South Main Street in the heart of Pearl River, NY, the space is not only vibrant in color, but also in sounds on Friday morning from 10 – 11:30 through the end of May. The 8-week session tuition is $50.

Spearheaded by Learning Collaborative Board members Dr. Howard Goldstein and Diana Worby, the Collaborative partnered with Rockland Conservatory of Music to add an adult chorus borne of a group of singers – both experienced and novice – who were eager to sing together and make music part of their lives. The result has been magic.

At the piano and the helm, is Judith Gorman, an incredibly capable and enthusiastic conductor. Ms. Gorman, a recently retired executive from the world's largest engineering society, is also a musician who never stopped making music. With a Master's degree in Music Theory, and several years teaching music, both privately and at CUNY (aka CCNY uptown), and the Nightingale-Bamford School in NYC - theory was her academic center, but choral singing was her musical passion.

Regarding her new music endeavour she beams "Leading a chorus where participation is open to everyone (no background required, no audition, etc.) really requires teaching music. And the experience has to work for all members of the ensemble. That's a dynamic, psychological, and aesthetic undertaking, adding up to true joy! What a group!"

Judith Gorman became an active director in an unusual choral environment, under the mentorship of jazz pianist Lance Hayward. Lance, an unsighted pianist, arranger, and choral director, led his singers from the "bench," conducting with his words, his hands in the air and on the keyboard, and by the movements of his body. Those who could see intuitively passed along the message to those who could not. The result was spectacular and Judith has taken a page from his book.

Sylvia Blake, Ed.D, Dean and Chief Operating Officer at LIU Hudson is pleased about the partnership, and Rockland Conservatory of Music Executive Director Marigene Kettler agrees. She adds, “Having such a high-caliber musical opportunity open to singers of all experiences is integral to keeping creative aging alive and well in Rockland County. Having our music school aligned with the Learning Collaborative at LIU Hudson is a natural joint venture which has the ability to grow each time it is offered.”
